The quest will start after the following requirements are met:

When all requirements are met, the next time you return to the museum, a group of Vigilants will be found in the Hall of Heroes talking to Auryen. They demand to hand over the Daedric Relics displayed in the Daedric Exhibit Hall because they think they're not safe there. After the conversation the quest will start. Speak with their leader Astrian and seek out Auryen to discuss the matter.

Walkthrough[]

Astrian will forcegreet you for a word. During the conversation you have several options:

You can simply refuse his request of the artifacts. Auryen then will ask you to follow him into the Curator's Office and discuss the situation. He will propose different options to deal with the Vigilants:

  1. Passing over replicas to the Vigilants (see "Giving in, but not really"),
  2. Giving the originals (see "Giving in"),
  3. Appealing to their sense of self interest (see "Bribe the Vigilants"),
  4. Dealing with the vigilants separately (see "Kill the Vigilants separately"),
  5. Forcing them out of the Museum by rallying the Museum Guards (see "Kill 'em all!"). This option is only available when choosing option 3 or 4 before and can be triggered by speaking with Auryen again.

Or you can just give in immediately during the conversation with Astrian (again, see "Giving in").

You can tell Astrian that "you'll be disappointed" cause the museum only has replicas on display (see "Sealed faraway").

If you have Stendarr's Hammer on display (which is likely the case since Auryen should give it to you after having 350 museum displays), when speaking with Astrian, you can also tell the Vigilants to focus on Stendarr's artifact instead of Daedric ones (see "Oaths to Stendarr").

Giving in, but not really[]

When choosing the option to hand over replicas, a new recipe will be available at the Replica Station, the Daedric Replica Set. Craft it with the following materials:

After crafting the Set, a Vigilant's Crate will appear at the stairs in the Atrium, store the set there. After a final conversation between Auryen and Astrian, the Vigilants will leave with replicas and the quest will conclude.

Giving in[]

When choosing the option to hand over the originals, a new recipe will be available at the Replica Station, the Daedric Replica Set. This is the same set as before (except a message box will pop up informing you that the originals on display will be replaced by replicas). Activate the Vigilant's Crate, and after a final conversation between Auryen and Astrian, the Vigilants will leave with the originals and the quest will conclude.

Kill 'em all![]

The bloodiest way would be to rally the Museum Guards and throw the vigilants out. After choosing this option, quest markers will point to the guards (markers will also point to the Vigilants, ignore them for now). After speaking with the guards, the quest will update, now go to the Hall of Heroes to confront the Vigilants. Astrian will not listen, so a fight will be inevitable and you, Auryen and the Guards will have to kill every single Vigilant. After the last Vigilant is dead, the quest will conclude.

Bribe the Vigilants[]

Another option is to bribe each Vigilant so they will abandon their claim on the relics. Speak with Auryen about that topic and try. If any of the bribe attempts fail, you can choose to kill the respective Vigilant silently (see "Kill the Vigilants separately") or to "Kill 'em all!".

Bribing Astrian[]

Astrian

Astrian is found in the Daedric Exhibit Hall, standing in front of the Black Books display. Speak to him and try to convince him. If you're successful, he will demand a set of books about the Mythic Dawn: Mythic Dawn Commentaries, Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3 and Vol. 4. Bring them to him and he will abstain from his claim to hand over the relics.
Note: As of v6.6.0, there is no option to create a second copy of the set at the Scribe's Desk, so unless you're running a mod which provides a second set (e.g. Immersive College of Winterhold or Kaidan 2), the books will be lost to the Museum (will be fixed in the next update). However, Silus Vesuius's House, where all four volumes of the Mythic Dawn Commentaries are obtained, is a respawning location. This means that after some time has passed since first obtaining them, the books can be obtained again. This effectively makes it so copies can be simultaneously held by the museum and given to Astrian.

Bribing Tylende[]

Tylende

Tylende can be found on the gallery of the Planetarium, standing in front of the starmap receptable. Speak to her and try to convince her. She will demand a quality weapon to aid her in her duties. Find or craft an UNENCHANTED weapon worth 1500 gold or more and give it to her. She will agree not to press her case about the relics. Giving her anything worth less than 1500 gold will fail the object instead.

Note: Due to a vanilla game mechanism, Tylende can sometimes mistake a high-value enchanted weapon for its unenchanted counterpart, leading to the objective failing (more information needed).

Bribing Burondis[]

Burondis

Burondis is standing at the Museum entrance. Speak to him and try to convince him. If you're successful, he will accept a donation of 15000 gold and leaves the fate of the relics in your hands.

Bribing Morgi[]

Morgi

Morgi is standing at the entrance to the Library's first floor. Speak to him and try to convince him. If you're successful, he will accept a position as a Museum Guard and guard the relics as they are.

Bribing Cindra[]

Cindra

Cindra will be sitting at the dining table in the Reception Hall. Speak to her and try to convince her. She will demand a new place for the Vigilants after the Hall of the Vigilant was destroyed, and you show her the Abandoned House (you have to complete The House of Horrors first). She then agrees to set aside her claim on the relics.

Kill the Vigilants separately[]

If you choose this option or if any of the above bribing attempts failed, you can speak with Auryen and choose to eliminate any uncooperative Vigilant clandestinely. He will give you the Storeroom Portal Key and send you on your way. Note that you can still choose the "Kill 'em all!" option.

Killing Astrian[]

Astrian can be convinced to read either one of the Black Books or the Oghma Infinium (only originals!). Not a good idea as it will kill him instantly.

Killing Tylende[]

Speak with Tylende and use the "Push" activator placed on her after the conversation. She will fall down and die (Madras will be annoyed about the the extra cleaning...).

Killing Burondis[]

Speak with Burondis about the view and lead him to the balcony of the Explorer's Society Guild House where the Dev Aveza is anchored (actually he will lead you there). Push him the same way you did with Tylende and he will take a looong air dive.
Note: If for whatever reason you haven't acquired the Dev Aveza yet, the gangway will not be there. Burondis will jump down on the cliff below and fall over the edge. If not, you can help along with Unrelenting Force (min. 2nd stage needed). The objective to show him the balcony and the quest marker will remain, but the quest can be progressed normally and will conclude after killing all vigilants and speaking with Auryen. (will be fixed in the next update)

Killing Morgi[]

Auryen will give you a key that can activate the inactive portal in the Museum Storeroom. Speak with Morgi and lead him to the Storeroom. Speak with him again about the portal and convince him to go through it once it has been activated. Now unlock the portal with the key, Morgi will go through it. Lock the portal and he will be gone forever.

Killing Cindra[]

During the conversation in the Curator's Office Auryen will mention a Jarrin Root poison he used to kill rats (very LARGE ones...). Take the Pest Poison from the table in the Museum Storeroom and seek out Cindra. Speak to her and she will offer a glass of wine. Offer one in return (that you will secretly poison), she will accept and passes on unexpectedly.

Sealed faraway[]

You will tell Astrian that the museum only has replicas of Daedric artifacts on display (even if it's not the truth in your playthrough, the Vigilants don't have to know that). The real ones are too dangerous so they are sealed somewhere far away and guarded heavily, while you have the only key to its entrance.

Astrian will still ask about the location so he can head there and destroy the artifacts, but you refuse to tell him while also reminding him that those artifacts are still your property, so he could get arrested should he make a move. The Vigilants will then leave.

Oaths to Stendarr[]

You can trick Astrian to swear on his oaths to Stendarr, about ceding the claim of Daedric artifacts in exchange of Stendarr's hammer. Afterwards, lead him to the display, he can figure out himself that it's the real one after a close look.

Astrian will try to take the hammer AND the Daedric artifacts at this point, but since he has already taken his vow, in Stendarr's name, you can easily convince him to keep his promise.

However, Astrian soon finds out he cannot actually take the hammer, claiming "it will not budge from its rack". Even after you put the hammer on the floor for him, he still can't pick it up. Again, in Stendarr's name, even if Astrian doesn't actually get the hammer, taking away the Daedric Relics is still considered as going back on his oaths. So the Vigilants will not be happy, but have to leave the museum with nothing.

Conclusion[]

After dealing with the Vigilants in one way or another, speak with Auryen and the quest will conclude.
