Question mark
Missing Information (Issue: Outdated as of v19+)
This article requires more information about the subject. You can help Legacy of the Dragonborn by expanding it.

The quest starts when you have completed the introductory museum quest 'An Interesting Prospect' to become the museum's relic hunter (not needed with the Live Another Life Relic Hunter start, as you are already the museum's relic hunter) and have reached a display count of 300. When returning to the museum after fulfilling these prerequisites, Brother Ikard will speak to you before you can enter. Note that if Shadows of One's Past is already running, this quest will not start until it is completed.

Every stage where you need to find something is presented as a duplicate version once a certain amount of time passes. The duplicate version will present quest markers while the others will not. This is to ensure that the quest progresses at certain pacing. If you can't find an item just wait long enough for the marker to appear on its own.

While this quest triggers automatically, it is completely optional; if you don't want to play this quest, you can console "set hauntblock to 1" and the quest will never start.

As of V5, Brother Ikard will now have dialog options to have him complete the quest for you.

When returning to the museum after the requirements have been fulfilled, Brother Ikard will talk to you before you have a chance to enter the museum.

Apparently the museum is haunted and it even drove Auryen off. In order to properly research this strange occurrence, Ikard will need your help.

Return to Ikard after nine in the night.

Return to Ikard at 9PM to start the quest and enter the museum. Ikard will suggest you search the library.

Search the Library for clues.

A lot of things will be displaced and every so often items will be dislodged and fly at you. In order to progress the quest you'll need to find a note on the third floor of the library under a bench. (The letter seems to have been moved to rare books area on the shelf above "The Book of the Dragonborn" location).

Show the letter to Ikard.

Show the letter and listen to him.

Have a rest in the staff barracks.

Take a nap in the bed at the far end of the Staff Barracks.

Find additional clues.

Ikard will suggest you check on the Wine Cellar, Books Stack cellar and the Gallery of Natural Science. Check those out.

To progress, you'll need to find the journal in the Gallery of Natural Science. However your displays have all come to life and will attack you. It's only the ones you actually had made up to this point. This stage is harder the more displays were built, good thing the dragons can't come back to life (remember you already absorbed their souls).

Show the journal to Ikard.

Find Ikard and show him the journal. He will tell you to find the painting of Lord Macnarian.

Search the Museum for the Painting of Lord Macnarian.

Portrait location

Go to the Armory and take the trap door to the Museum Storeroom on the right. The painting is behind the barrels and crates.

Hang the Painting in the Reception Hall.

Hang the painting in the Reception Hall above the fireplace. Ikard will say you both need to sleep it off and make sure everything is alright now.

Sleep in the staff barracks.

After two hours you'll wake up...

The whole place is set aflame and covered in blood!

Search the museum for clues about what happened.

Nightmare journal

Find anything that can tell you what happened. Most doors will be locked. So search around the museum and enjoy...

The first thing you need to find is a journal next to Ikard's burned corpse in the staff barracks.

Then look around for more information, the note is in the middle of the elder-scrolls stands in the Hall of Heroes. Reading the note you'll get sleepy...

Find the commission contract.

Commision contract

You'll wake up in the Hall of Heroes with Ikard standing over you. Apparently it was all just a horrible nightmare.

Ikard will have a some more information and you're off to find a contract in the hot springs area.

Show the contract to Ikard.

Show Ikard the contract and he'll be able to point you to the family of stone masons that are involved in the contract.

Find Morgaine Olfstead.

Go to Katla's farm and find the descendants of Morgaine Olfstead. Pay the rest of the gold and the statue will be delivered.

Check back at the museum tomorrow.

Wait 24 hours for the statue to be delivered and the quest will progress.

Return to the museum.

Ikard will say his goodbyes, the statue has found its place. Now you have two additional guests at your museum and The Ghost Helm should be ready for taking above the dining room fireplace.

Quest Stages

Night at the Museum (DBM_HauntedMuseumQuest)
Stage Journal Entry
10 The museum has been closed by Auryen due to a supernatural presence inside. I have spoken with brother Ikard who was brought in to investigate. I should return after nine tonight and help him investigate the museum.

Objective : Return to Ikard after nine at night

15,16 The Dragonborn Gallery is closed to the public due to a supernatural disturbance inside. Brother Ikard and I are investigating. We are heading inside - I'll check out the library while Ikard investigates the main hall.

Objective : Search the library for clues

20 I found a peculiar letter in the Library. It seems rather old and makes mention of the museum building. Ikard believes it must have some connection to the strange goings-on. He is having a short rest. I should show it to Ikard and see what he makes of it.
25 He is having a bit of a rest. I should go ahead and finish a quick sweep around the museum and then join him in the Staff Barracks to take a short nap.

Objective : Have a rest in the staff barracks

30 I woke from a short nap. Ikard and I should get back to work.

Objective :

35,36 We have had a short nap and when we awoke the haunting of the museum appears to be intensifying. Furniture on the ceiling, chandelier hanging from the floor and mannequins walking around on their own. I should investigate the Hall of Natural Science, the Wine Cellar and the Book Stacks.

Objective : Find additional clues

40 I searched the Natural Science Gallery and found it had been flooded. Not only that but the displays have all come to life! I found an old journal floating in the water which has handwriting that matches the letter I found. I should show it to Ikard.

Objective : Show the journal to Ikard

45,46 We believe that the ghostly activity is caused by the former owner of the Gallery, Niles Macnarian. The journal that I found indicates that a painting of Macnarian was commissioned to be hung in the finished building. Ikard and I believe that Macnarian could perhaps be upset about being forgotten for his efforts here and if I could find the painting and display it, perhaps he'd be appeased.

Objective : Search the museum for the painting of lord Macnarian

50 I've found it in the Museum Store Room. I should show it to Ikard and we should find a place to hang it.

Objective : Show the painting to Ikard

55 Ikard and I should hang the painting in the Reception Hall.

Objective : Hang the painting in the reception hall

60 We have placed found and placed the painting of Macnarian in the Reception Hall of the museum and plan to sleep the rest of the night here to ensure that he is appeased. I should use the bed in the Staff Barracks again.

Objective : Sleep in the staff barracks

65,66 I have awakened to a nightmare. I don't feel entirely awake, or perhaps something dreadful has just happened to me. Is the museum on fire? I need to find Ikard and get out of here!
70,71 Ikard is dead and the museum is on fire! I found an old issue of the Black Hours Courier news sheet which has an article in it about the death of Niles Macnarian and his wife. It indicates he died right after hearing the news of his wife's death in a fire. There must be another clue somewhere.

Objective: Search for more clues about Niles' death

75 I found another journal of Niles Macnarian and... I feel so tired. So odd. I...
80 I have woken up from a terrible nightmare. Ikard seems to be perfectly fine, thank the gods. It was all a bad dream.
85,86 It's a long shot, but there is a small possibility that there may be a remaining clue about Macnarian's final wish to create a monument to his wife, and it may be out at the Hot Springs. I'll go have a look.

Objective: Find the commission contract

90 Well, wonders never cease. The commission receipt has been wedged between two rocks out in the Hot Springs for all these years. I should show Ikard.

Objective: Show the commission contract to Ikard

95 The ghostly activity is being caused by the former owner of the Gallery, Niles Macnarian - who, heartbroken at the loss of his wife had a monument commissioned for her but it was never finished. The commission receipt I found says the sculptor Burgess Olfstead was to carve the statue. Ikard suggested I should head down to Katla's farm and see if Morgaine Olfstead is related to the Burgess. He may know what became of the statue.

Objective: Find Morgaine Olfstead

96 I have spoken to Morgaine Olfstead, who is the great-great-grandchild of Burgess Olfstead. The statue is still in his basement waiting for the remaining 4000 septims to be paid. I should gather the funds and complete the payment to appease Lord Macnarian.

Objective: Return to Morgaine Olfstead with the payment for the statue

100 I've paid Morgaine the remaining 4000 gold owed for the statue carved by his great-great-grandfather. He will deliver it to the museum by tomorrow. I should check back after it's been delivered and ensure that Macnarian is finally appeased.

Objective: Check back at the museum tomorrow

105 The statue should be delivered by now. I should check back at the museum to check.

Objective: Return to the museum

110,111 I have sought out the descendant of the sculptor who allowed me to pay the remaining gold for the statue and it is now on display outside the entrance to the museum. I have managed to fulfill the final wishes of Niles Macnarian and the museum is now restored to normal.
