The axe belonged to the first chieftain of the Thirsk Mead Hall, the Skaal Nord Hrothmund the Red. After Thirsk was rebuilt for the first time, when the need for a leader became clear, Hrothmund was the natural choice, but was challenged by fellow kinsman Drengr Bronze-Helm, who disagreed and saw himself more capable of being the leader, a sentiment he shared during a feast in Thirsk. Hrothmund reacted by decapitating the man with his axe and displaying his head to his fellow Nords as a sign of his undisputed leadership. This started Thirsk's tradition of succession. Hrothmund was chieftain for 21 years, until his death at the hands of Ondjage, the Fell Wolf. His axe was buried with his remains in his namesake barrow. Following Hrothmund's death, the inhabitants of Thirsk began the tradition of sending their new chieftains to the barrow to receive Hrothmund's blessing. Hrothmund is able to talk through his axe if someone grabs its handle, to decide if the current chieftain of Thirsk was worthy of the title.
