The Gallery of Natural Science is the part of the museum that covers the rich flora, fauna and minerals Skyrim has. Its entrance is in the Upper Gallery of the Hall of Heroes.
The Gallery of Natural Science features buildable static displays. There is also a Gemstone Display and a Tide Pool Display for seashells. A large stairwell leads up to the Fossil Mining Room above the Natural Science Gallery where all the fossils are displayed.
If BadGremlin's Collection is installed, additional displays will be added to house Fishbowls and Fairy Cages.
Below is a list of all displays in the Gallery, starting from the left of the entrance.
Gildergreen Exhibit
This display features a display of the Gildergreen after the quest The Blessings of Nature has been completed.
The Gildergreen The Gildergreen is a holy tree found in the Skyrim city of Whiterun. It is sacred to worshippers of Kynareth, and is of great importance to the city's Temple of Kynareth. The Gildergreen, planted during the early days of the settlement, was grown from a cutting or seedling (accounts vary) taken from the ancient Eldergleam, one of the oldest living things in Tamriel, located in a cave in Eastmarch. Even its name is an echo of the mother tree. Worshippers of Kynareth could sense something holy in it, and since then many pilgrims have traveled to Whiterun to hear the goddess' wind blow through its branches. |
Additionally, this display is home to the fairies from BadGremlin's Collection, if the mod is installed. When a cage is placed, the fairy will leave it and will be seen in the display.

1) Bee in a Jar | 2) Dragonfly in a Jar | 3) Moth in a Jar | 4) Butterfly in a Jar | 5) Torchbug in a Jar |
Flora of Skyrim
From the Reach to the Pale, Skyrim is rich with a vast array of flora. This atrium exhibits a sampling from across Skyrim and its many diverse climates. Additionally samples can been seen up close in planters in the center of this hall. Despite the subtle temperature variances across the province, there is a distinct difference in the foliage across the holds. |
||||
Entomology Exhibit
The cornerstone of every ecosystem and food chain starts at the lowly insect. If one keeps a keen eye as they travel across Skyrim, a vast array of insect life can be found. Not only as a food source to various small predators, insects are also used in alchemical formulae. |
Wolf and Elk Exhibit
Display | Materials needed | Description |
---|---|---|
Wolf |
|
Wolves
The wolves of Skyrim are a common sight, roaming individually or in small packs. They will hunt other animals but often divert their attention if a person draws near. Wolves come in standard tundra wolf and arctic wolf variations, the latter of which are a more ferocious breed. |
Elk |
Elk
Elks of Skyrim are larger and more rugged than their southern cousins found in Cyrodiil and other similar breeds found in Vallenwood or the Summerset Isle. They are a main food source for packs of wolves and are also hunted by men for their pelts, meat and horns. |
Sabre Cat and Bear Exhibit
Display | Materials needed | Description |
---|---|---|
Sabre Cat |
Sabre Cat
Sabre cats are large, powerful, and fast felines that, according to Cats of Skyrim, have evolved two dangerously sharp front teeth. They will attack immediately and represent a lethal foe. They are found in the wilds of Skyrim. All sabre cats will usually abandon any current prey they are stalking or fighting and direct their voracious appetites toward you. Sabre cats may carry Witbane, a disease which reduces Magicka regeneration by half. They dislike water, so you can use this to your advantage. As they are naturally stealthy creatures, you may not notice a sabre cat approaching until it's too late. |
|
Bear |
Bear
Bears are large, hostile enemies that will attack if you are found infringing on their territory. They live either in the wilderness or in their cave lairs. Bears carry the disease Bone Break Fever, which reduces your Stamina if you contract it while fighting one. Fortunately, bears will always roar or growl in an effort to intimidate potential threats before attacking, and thus are fairly easy to avoid if you wish to do so. Standard bears and the larger cave bears are encountered throughout Skyrim and Solstheim, while the mighty snow bears are largely confined to high altitudes and snowy regions. |
Horker and Mudcrab Exhibit
Display | Materials needed | Description |
---|---|---|
Horker |
Horker
Horkers are large creatures native to northern Skyrim. They make dens inside caves and grottos along the coastline and prey upon fish, mudcrabs and any other creature slow enough to not escape their slow attack. They are heavily insulated with thick layers of fat and secrete oil that keeps water off their bodies when on land. As long as distance is kept, horkers will leave people alone, but wander too close and they may attack. |
|
Mudcrab |
|
Mudcrab
Mudcrabs are native to most provinces across Tamriel. These creatures live near the coastlines, rivers and lakes and can survive in areas of extreme cold or heat with slight variances in appearance based on the region they have developed in. They burrow beneath the mud, posing as unsuspecting rocks and leaping out at passing prey. |
Frostbite Spider and Chaurus Exhibit
Display | Materials needed | Description |
---|---|---|
Frostbite Spider |
Frostbite Spider
Frostbite Spiders are giant arachnids which attack on sight, and can be found both in the wilderness and in dungeons. Their lairs are often covered in webs and usually contain web sacs. Spider eggs can be found in these web sacs as well as nearby egg sacs. When at range they spit poisonous venom and can leap onto the victim to attack with their bite. Without poison resistance one will be poisoned by nearly every hit from these monsters. Their deceased victims, dessicated corpses, can sometimes be found nearby. |
|
Chaurus |
Chaurus
Chaurus are medium to large hostile earwig-like creatures found in swamps, marshlands, and deep underground caverns. They vigorously project a strong acidic poison, which can eat through most armor pretty quickly. They can cling to walls and have large amounts of health. Chauri are often found in the company of Falmer, who breed them for their chitin. Chaurus Hunters and Chaurus Hunter Fledglings have apparently transformed from a regular Chaurus. |

Chicken |
Chicken
Chickens are docile, domesticated birds common throughout Skyrim, usually within cities and towns. |
|
Horse |
Horse
Horses are available as mounts in Skyrim, and improve your movement speed. They are somewhat slower than horses in Cyrodiil but are better at combat and have more endurance. |
|
Cow |
|
Cow
Cows are large, docile, domesticated animals common throughout Skyrim, especially on farms. Cows are often painted and offered by farmers to giants who live near their lands. This practice keeps the giant at bay but can turn ugly for the farmer at the whim of the giant. |
Dog |
|
Dog
Dogs have long been domesticated in Skyrim, as companions and partners in trade. Dogs can be seen roaming the wilds alone or in small groups as well. |
Troll and Goat Exhibit
Display | Materials needed | Description |
---|---|---|
Troll |
|
Troll
Trolls are large, ape-like humanoids endowed with three eyes. Their powerful arms and claws deal massive physical damage. Trolls are also very strong defensively, possessing high health levels and a particularly effective ability to quickly and fully regenerate health during combat. Their greatest vulnerability is to fire, which not only damages them, but also impairs their capacity to self-heal. |
Goat |
|
Goat
Goats are passive creatures generally found on mountain slopes. They can be hunted for their hides, meat and goat horns, but occasionally drop nothing. In addition to those found in the wild, domestic goats are also found around farms and towns. |
Hagraven and Spriggan Exhibit
Display | Materials needed | Description |
---|---|---|
Hagraven |
Hagraven
Hagravens are a horrific cross between an old crone and a bird. They are extremely dangerous and equally hostile up close or when casting various Destruction spells from afar, usually preferring area-of-effect spells such as Fireball. They can often be found in the company of the Forsworn or dwelling in secret groves and lairs in the wilderness with other witches and hags. |
|
Spriggan |
Spriggan
Spriggans are malevolent nature spirits appearing as glowing, green humanoid females made mostly of wood. They can restore themselves to full health easily, and can call various animals to aid them in battle, even normally non-hostile creatures such as foxes and deer. Spriggans also have the ability to summon swarms of insects to attack. They are weak to fire. Spriggans can be an unwanted surprise in seemingly peaceful caves, as they blend in with the foliage using an invisibility spell, then attack when you pass them. Some even seem to inhabit the trunks of trees, stepping from within them when one comes too close. |

Vulthuryol |
Vulthuryol
Believed to be a variety of ancient dragon, Vulthuryol was discovered within the massive underground ruins of Blackreach. Prolonged exposure to the environment of Blackreach has apparently affected his appearance, yet his structural form remains closely similar to that of the ancient dragon breed. |
|
Legendary Dragon |
Legendary Dragon
A variety of dragon seldom seen in Skyrim is dubbed the legendary dragon. This vicious beast is as swift as it is powerful, sporting characteristic arching horns from its head. The legendary dragon generally uses a much larger array of Thu'um when in battle, and engaging one is no easy task. |
|
Kreindeinvith |
Kreindeinvith
Kreindeinvith was a variety of dragon known as a swamp dragon or blood dragon, believed to be amphibious dragons native to Black Marsh. Dragons of this type have been seen here in Skyrim as of late. Kreindeinvith was encountered within Windcaller Pass. |
|
Sahrotaar |
Sahrotaar
The origins of the serpentine dragon Sahrotaar are unknown. The nature of the beast suggests that it is from Akavir like its more common brethren, but the theory has been submitted that it may hail directly from Apocrypha, Hermaeus Mora's realm of Oblivion. Sahrotaar was vanquished in the Dragonborn's climactic encounter with Miraak. |

Naaslaarum and Voslaarum |
Naaslaarum and Voslaarum
Naaslaarum and Voslaarum are twin dragons, rumored to have hatched from a single egg despite evidence that dragons do not brood or lay eggs. They are of the revered classification of dragons. These two were encountered and defeated at the same time in the Forgotten Vale of the Snow Elf Temple ruins. |
|
Elder Dragon |
Elder Dragon
The elder dragon is a much more rugged and powerful breed of dragon, bringing to bear more powerful shouts and abilities. These beasts can be found all across Skyrim since the coming of Alduin, though the Dragonborn seeks to rein their kind in. |
|
Izvenyah |
Izvenyah
The frost dragon is one of the more deadly varieties of dragon found in Skyrim. Though all dragons originate from Akavir and all breeds seem to be converging here to Skyrim, it is thought that the frost dragons of the Merethic Era chose Skyrim as their home due to the cold. One example of the frost dragon species is Izvenyah who was defeated at Windcaller's Pass. |
|
Odahviing | None, quest display that activates after completing 'The Fallen'. |
Odahviing
Odahviing is a rare red dragon who until the fall of Alduin was his greatest ally. Lured to Dragonsreach and captured, the Dragonborn forced Odahviing to take them to Skuldafn for their final encounter with Alduin in Sovngarde. |
The Aquarium
The Aquarium consists of a large water tank with three glass panes. It features a Fish Hatchery which can be accessed via a short stairway behind the door on the right. You can jump into the water from there, catch your breeded fish and leave the water via the "Exit Aquarium"-activator to the right.
With BadGremlin's Collection installed, shelves will be added in front of the left pane to display the Fishbowls, and the fish will be set free in the Aquarium (these fish obviously cannot be caught).

Planters
Next to the Tide Pool display, build around the pillars, a total of 64 planters are located. They provide the regular Fertile Soil system and can be used to plant and harvest food and ingredients.
Red Mountain Display
The Red Mountain display is the only display in the Gallery of Natural Science that is activated by default and doesn't need anything to do. It is just an enjoyable view with some information.
The mountain is a vast volcano that dominates the island of Vvardenfell in Morrowind. The mountain has had two major eruptions: the Sun's Death event in 1E 668, and the Red Year in the 4E 5. The island was actually named after the volcano: the original name of Red Mountain was Vvardenfell, which translates to City of the Strong Shield in Dwemeri. It is a small continent all to itself, riven from the rest of Morrowind by the remains of a colossal crater. There are numerous texts available in the museum library.
Gemstone Display
Three display cases for all obtainable gems. The gems can mainly be found randomly in loot containers and through mining. Most can also be found in a fixed location. When activating a display, it lets you choose between placing all gems from your inventory or removing them all from the displays.
